The Technical Toolkit: Does your facility now fall under PSM?
spacing
On July 18, 2016, OSHA enacted a memorandum updating Appendix A of Standard 1910.119.

Rule changes applied in this memorandum will make some facilities that were previously not covered under 1910.119 now a PSM facility.

The major change issued in the memorandum applies to the switch from the Maximum Commercial Grade philosophy to the 1% Test; however, additional clarifications were also applied for chemicals with both anhydrous and aqueous forms

For more information,
click here to see the memorandum in full.

The facilities that fall under PSM due to this change of the standard have until March 31, 2018, to come into compliance with the OSHA standard.

If there is any question about your facility's new compliance standing, be sure to contact Cognascents with information regarding your facility and we will help you determine if your facility should be covered by OSHA 1910.119.

Do not wait until it is too late.

Don't Get Distracted...Work in Series

Process safety is a discipline and condition and mindset requiring perpetual vigilance and focus.  There are wolves at the gates 24/7 and one will get through without varied layers of protection.  I do not know a soul that wants this to happen on his or her watch.  So what needs to happen to keep the wolves at bay?  We cannot get distracted.

Bad things happen for a lot of reasons – someone made a mistake (e.g. poor design or wrong step), mechanical failure, electrical failure, weather, and the list goes on. We cannot eliminate all risk in our lives and we cannot eliminate all risk in our oil, gas, and chemical facilities...

Cognascents welcomes John King to the team! If you have yet to meet "King," see his introduction below.

I’m pretty much a Texan and have been in Texas 99% of my life (except for a brief stint in Arkansas from age 0 to 7 months). I have a beautiful wife, a lovely little six-year-old named Colton, and an adorable little girl named Riley, who we recently added to the family. I enjoy guitar, singing, song-writing, and woodworking. I have been in O&G since early 2007 where I started with Celerity3 Engineering. I went on to do RBMI work for three years before joining Cognascents in July of this year. I am excited about being a part of the team and cannot wait to get to know everyone!

Cognascents is extending a special "Thank You" to our intern Tim Threatt.

Tim is from Hutto, Texas, and is a rising senior at Rice University. He will be completing his major in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in the Spring of 2017.

He has gained experience and helped Cognascents with projects including field walkdowns, P&ID generation with AutoCAD, pressure relief analysis (PRA), and business development strategies. Tim also took the lead in planning our summer team building experience where Cognascents learned how to be a part of a rowing team.
